Infinite spring
It’s hard to believe that on a lathe you can apply a spring with a train length. After all, the length of the spring for this method of manufacture is limited by the length of the mandrel on which it is wound.
At what here, ask, the lathe? There are special machines that literally shoot springs: small ones – hundreds of pieces per minute, with a larger diameter – dozens. But when the springs need a little, of different diameters, with different steps, it is unprofitable to keep the submachine guns on each variety. You clamp a mandrel into the lathe of the lathe and, repeating the grandfather’s reception, pass the wire for the tension between two planks clamped in the tool holder of the machine.
The cartridge rotates, the caliper creeps along the lead screw, and the wire is laid flat on the mandrel by the end of which the last coil creeps in a couple of minutes. But what is this? Instead of the given 40 mm in diameter, all fifty, and the step turned out to be “free”. Maybe the wire was weakly clamped, without proper tightening? We try again. Now they went too far in the opposite direction: the diameter turned out to be less than necessary. So it is possible and an hour to go. Having finally picked up the correct tension, we get the right spring. But there is no guarantee that the second and third springs will repeat the result. A long spring – how to draw it?

Productivity… If you do not stop the machine in time, it will fill the whole shop with foam as a foam. Instead of a cylindrical mandrel, a steel cone on which springs can be wound in a wide range of diameters. On the sections of the cone, which are closer to the top, we obtain springs of small diameter, closer to the base – large. A certain step of the spring is provided by the separating knife, and the press roller is winded by the planetary motion along the generatrix of the cone. Turn on the machine, and crawls out of the device, wriggling like a snake, a spring. And it can be long with a fire hose, if necessary.
Adjust the device is very simple. I went, for example, a spring with a diameter smaller than necessary, – the place of winding moves closer to the base of the cone. That’s all. In a few minutes, you can adjust the device to any diameter within the same cone, and having several replaceable cones, you can wind the spring of any diameter and pitch within the nominal range.
